SANFORD — In the ongoing battle for first place in the Southern Peaks League girls division, the Sanford Indians stayed in a tie with La Veta by defeating the Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds, 32-28. Sanford held an 11-6 lead at halftime, and still led 18-13 at the end of the third period, with Sangre managing to reduce the margin by one point in the fourth quarter, outscoring Sanford 15-14. Whitney Sue Canty led Sanford’s balanced scoring with 8 points, followed by Whitney Ann Canty with 7, Brooke Faucette-6, Taryn Larsen-6, and Tori Mortensen-5. The Indians were 16 of 34 at the line. Sangre was led by Megan Beiriger with 7, Jodi Beiriger-6, Jessica New-6, Brooke McKinley-4, and Lexi Hamilton-3. The T-birds were 7 of 19 at the line.
